Originally titled Purge: The Island, The First Purge is set to take the horror franchise back to the start on the US’s Independence Day this year, and show us how the whole Purge thing started.

Here’s the synopsis for the prequel, courtesy of the good folks at Bloody Disgusting:

To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalised, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.

The film is directed by Gerard McMurray with a screenplay from Purge creator James DeMonaco, and stars Y’Lan Noel, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, Lex Scott Davis and Marisa Tomei.

The First Purge is in cinemas from 4 July 2018. Get all the latest horror news with every issue of SciFiNow.
